John knows that at best he can be described as a male escort and at worst as a whore, but it’s what he does and he’s good at it. He sells his body and his clients come with fangs so it’s more about blood than sex. Hiding behind a false smile and his acting skills is the only way he survives, but when he meets one of his latest clients, Michael, his professional detachment is severely threatened, leading him into very dangerous territory.
Forgotten Soul is the first volume of the Soul Reader Series written by Tasha D-Drake and published through Wittegen Press. I came across this UK independent publisher a few years back and decided to try out their books. Forgotten Soul is free to download and a great intro to a well laid out series. I have read this book twice and it is easy to see why the story stuck to my memory even after a year between each read.
John is shown as a tortured, lone soul who finds himself at the hands of three vampires. The story starts off like any typical erotic vampire sex slave/addict story but then dives into a much more complicated twisted revelation of who John is. The veil is parted to reveal the Good vs. Bad, the fight for freedom, and finding true love. All these themes play out so well that they fit perfectly, the story is believable, and helps to make it enjoyable.
The writing is great and refreshing. Not to mention there is a nice amount of drama and suspense towards the end and an abundance of sexiness. The only thing I find the need to point out is that the ending seemed a bit rushed. I don’t mean in regards to the writing, but to the content. Sitting down for a cup of tea fits more into contemporary romances that don’t include vampires and the sort.
A dab more drama, a dab more conflict at the end and this book would have had me at the edge of my seat. However, like all short series that I wish had been longer, it leaves the rest to be pondered upon and gives the reader enough enticing to pick up the next book. Want a quick read that isn’t the usual erotic vampire sex story then check this book out.
Sum it up: A well written steamy gay paranormal romance that packs one heck of a punch.
What I liked most: The unexpected twist of what the book is really about.
What I liked the least: The ending, it seems a bit watered down.
Would I read the sequel(s)? Yes, in fact I have another book written by the same author, Chip Off the Old Block, and looking into getting the last two books in the Soul Reader Series.
