Gabrielle’s life hasn’t always been easy, but her last year in high school is going great. That is, until she gets attacked in her sleep by her own nightmares. When her father arrives, they vanish, but nothing’s ever going to be the same again. She is taken away by paramedics to treat her injuries, only to discover she is being committed to a psych ward instead.

But her dad has seen what happened to her and knows that she is not crazy… He should get her out of there, why doesn’t he?

Held against her will in a creepy asylum where a different kind of monster roams the halls in a white uniform, Gabrielle begins to wonder whether she is cursed… or whether she is really crazy after all.

She knows she must find a way to escape her nightmares, even if it seems impossible. Unraveling the mystery of her curse is the only thing that’s left … before a monster of her own making will come for her and claim her soul.

This is Part One of Six of the Z Series, which is meant to be small installments read in chronological order. NightmarZ: Asylum is a short and quick read ranging around 40 pages. With its short length, the scenes are somewhat quick paced, and the first installment ends in quite a cliffhanger. Not to give away any spoilers, the ending is somewhat questionable in how easy Gabrielle finds her way past her predicament as well as some more questionable story plot situations.

The series has a great premise and story is delivered in the first person view. The cover is well done, and the synopsis is enticing. However, there are some elements in the story that leaves the reader wanting more than what the story delivers. Take this part of the synopsis: Gabrielle’s life hasn’t always been easy, but her last year in high school is going great. This part is never shown, if you didn’t read it in the synopsis there would be no other way to know this. But since this story is delivered in installments more of the story might be revealed in time so this might be a good thing not so much a negative.

The story starts off right when she has the nightmare and wakes up to be attacked by it. Which isn’t a bad place to start, but it takes a few pages for the main character to explain that this is what happened. If the reader wasn’t paying close attention or didn’t read the synopsis they might have been clueless as to what exactly was going on. There were moments that the way some of the other characters were addressed threatened to drive me insane. I had to remind myself that the main character is seventeen, but still, I wish the author had dropped the creepy nurse tag once the person’s name had been revealed instead of using both labels. There were also other name tags given to other asylum personnel that could have been avoided if their names had just been disclosed. The name tags are fun and interesting the first time, but an entire part of the series filled with them is too much for my liking. They distract from the story.

There are some elements or scenes that might not be for everyone. There is a rape attempt and physical abuse that might drive some readers away. It is wise to be aware that this series is intended for an adult audience and even though the main character is only 17 years old there are warnings about such content. There is foul language, disturbing scenes of sex (attempted sex) and or violence (beating up a person), and the author even warns that it may trigger panic attacks.

If you can move past the questionable conditions the story plot gives to move the story along this is a very interesting series, one I would love to finish reading. Unfortunately, it seems the author doesn’t have the rest of the series available anymore. She does have three other books on her Amazon page along with a paperback version of this first installment. I do have Part Two, I had downloaded Part One and Two when they were both available so look forward to a review on Part Two but other than that we might have to cross our fingers that she makes the rest of the series available again. There is still so much of the story that needs revealing.

Thanks for reading and see you in the next review.
