Why settle for ONE free eBook when you can get several…?

Story-Cartel-logo

Since I missed June and July’s free eBook Spotlight I thought I give another shout out to Story Cartel. Amazon and Smashwords are filled with eBooks priced at $0. One can’t beat FREE, especially with Summer demanding those endless ICEEs and splashes in the pool. But what is even better is the chance to try a book out before it is released. Here are a few that have caught my attention from the great selection of genres Story Cartel has to offer:

The White Death by Daniel Rafferty

thewhitedeath

Expires in less than 21 hours

A deadly virus sweeping across Planet Earth…

An Alien Council with questionable motives and unlimited resources…

A threat to humanity greater than anything before…

It’s a busy day for the new President of the United States. To ensure humanity has a future and take drastic global action to curb the spread of the virus, President Thomas Morgan turns to the only people he can trust to solve the crisis and save humanity: Section 51, a team of scientists and public servants — and one loyal alien named Freda — operating beneath Area 51 in Nevada.

As human populations begin turning on each other, desperate for survival at all costs, civilized societies across the planet begin to disintegrate. Governments crumble, chaos reigns, and death spreads like wildfire. Can the president and Section 51 thwart the real possibility of extinction … and handle the consequences of their heart breaking decisions?

The Accord by Karl J. Morgan

theaccord

Expires in 17 days

A chance encounter with Zeet of The Accord almost doomed our galaxy in Tears of Gallia. Dave Brewster travels to a forgotten planet to uncover their intentions. The cyborgs of The Accord were once human, but have long ago moved their brains into robots. Now their leaders are massive constructed planets, hosting millions of smaller cyborgs and billions of human slaves who serve as laborers and food.

But The Accord has a problem. The Magallenic Clouds are running out of metal to build more robots. Now they must invade our galaxy to recruit new Friends and to harvest the metal and feedstock of our worlds.

While the Free Society masses its starship fleet to fight back, Dave must find a way to slow them down, or somehow convince them to end their heinous reign of terror. The Accord is an epic tale of impending war against a vastly superior enemy. It is also a story of new love, enduring faith and the ultimate power in the universe.

Free Writing: The Dead Can Run (Chp 4 Prt1)

Please keep in mind this is a first draft and no revisions or editing should be done as part of the exercise, though I failed miserably and edited for hours on end on this one. Though in no way does that mean you are getting a clean and amazing chapter, most likely the opposite. 🙂

I will be properly revising and editing this story in the next few days. Here is hoping to have the first compilation of the first six chapters before the end of this month. Also, I am sorry for taking so long in continuing this story. This is intended to be a free writing project and I was brainstorming ahead. Needed to take time off to undo those chapters in my mind.

Warning: 1st draft, possible rambling

The Dead Can Run

Chapter Four Part One

My teeth cut into my lower lip and my mouth filled with the taste of copper. I struggled to my feet to only be shoved back down. A hand pinned me to the floor by my hair followed by a knee to my back. The man was heavier than he looked.

“Let…let me…go,” I pleaded, blood seeped from my busted lip and coated the floor to then cling to the strands of my hair that had fallen loose from his grip. I tried to muffle a cry at the touch of the man’s hand trailing down my bare back. His rough fingertips lapping up the droplets of water that still clung to my flesh.

“What do you say we have a little fun before I turn you over to our Mr. Self-Made Leader huh?” the brute sneered, pressing me harder against the ground and digging his knee further into my back.

“You’re disgusting,” I shouted past his mocking laughter. I recognized his voice. He had been one of the men I had overheard while tied in the closet. His companion must be the other man he had been talking to.

“Just kill me already,” I cried, struggling against his hold as best as I could. My actions earned me another tug of my hair. Tears welt up in my eyes at the pain. I could feel my warm breath against my face and the blood draining from my fingers as I clung to the man’s wrist with both hands in an attempt to loosen his grip on my hair.

“Feisty, I like them feisty,” he laughed, yanking me to my feet, his grip on my hair threatening to scalp me where I stood.

“You know he won’t approve of this,” Cassy cut in, removing her gloves and tossing them aside. She stepped back into the bathroom to emerge with the handcuffs. Her calm and blank demeanor told me there was no salvation there and my fear grew. Just what kind of people were they?

“Come on Cassy, relax. I wasn’t really going to rape her,” the man who held me teased, pressing a blade against my skin. “At least not right now,” he whispered into my ear.

Were the zombies the real monsters here? I thought to myself as the knife nicked my skin.

“On second thought, why wait? I think you deserve a good reminder of how lucky it was that we found you. The zombies would have finished you off if it wasn’t for us. The least you can do is repay the gesture. What do you say?” my tormentor replied, his voice full of malice and of something else I wanted nothing of.

The blade disappeared and I was shoved towards the bed again. I cringed as my hands came in contact with the blood stained sheets. The smell of death engulfed my nostrils and my gag reflexes reminded me that they still worked. I dropped to my knees and threw up again, this time white foam mixed with the blood that had dripped to the floor from the carnage on the bed.

Before I could wipe the vomit clinging to my lips my head was jerked back and the man pressed himself against me, kneeling behind me.

“Should I take your silence as consent?” He ran his fingers across the side of my face. Every touch made my stomach twist with greater disgust, threatening to make me gag for a third time.

“Get off me,” I snapped, elbowing him in the face. I had just walked in on a bunch of lunatics, deadly lunatics, but I wasn’t ready to die yet. I still hadn’t found my son and I wasn’t about to let them have their way with me either.

I bolted to my feet and dashed for freedom. The other man blockading the door leading out of my room grasped my arms and twisted them behind me, turning me around to face my first attacker. My eyes swelled in tears and my throat tightened, I tried to scream but nothing came out. I didn’t want to think about what they had planned for me. Now that I was found not to be infected, would I die or worse would they really rape me?

“Where do you think you’re going?” the biggest of the brutes sneered, taking one broad step towards me. He grasped my neck with both his hands and squeezed. “You really want to die? Then who are we to keep…”

The man behind me yelped in surprise and I was shoved forward into the very man who tried to strangle me. We both tumbled towards the bloodied bed. I rolled off the bed and slammed into the hard floor, slamming my head against the edge of the night stand. I withered on the floor and clung to my head. Silence filled the room and I chanced a glance at the man still sprawled on the bed.

“What were my orders?” a familiar voice bellowed followed by the sound of a gunshot. Warm blood splattered on my face and I screamed.

Accidental Passion: Seduction by Meagan Hedin

Book Review

9/10

AccidentalSeduction

The life that Piper has known for the last seven years is changing. No longer needed as the mother-figure for her brother, can she let go of the past when another man desperately needs her? Can she allow herself to reignite the desire and passion that she had kept carefully locked away before dark forces tear her from those who love her?

Accidental Passion: Seduction is written by Meagan Hedin and published through BigWorldNetwork. This is the first book I’ve read from this author and the third title I have read from this indie publisher. Accidental Passion: Seduction does not fail to deliver on what its title and cover suggest. There are quite a handful of steamy scenes and enticing situations throughout the book to satisfy any fan of romance and erotica. For those seeking a little more, a wonderful mixture of suspense, romance, and light comedy makes this book more than just an erotic story. It makes it an enjoyable read for any genre fan.

The story begins with what seems to be a normal set of events, with Piper accompanying her brother to his new place followed by a return trip and finally leading to a nasty discovery. This opens up the path for the reader to get introduced to Noah Williams, the detective that will play Piper’s love interest. Though it is now clear that the situation that lead up to their meeting is highly suspenseful all on its own, each situation that follows keeps raising the bar.

But before one can discover this, the story takes a shift towards Piper’s brother love endeavors. With Piper and Noah’s story packed with so much tension Sam’s story seems a bit slow going. However, his story does progress and eventually picks up steam as he manages to find his own set of conflicting situations. Not to mention the moment where these two stories collide the end result delivers a large amount of drama and suspense that more than satisfies.

Each chapter leaves off with enough interest piqued to drive the reader forward. Each story arch is filled with an array of interesting characters, minor and major, good and bad. The villains are as unique from each other as they are to Piper and Sam. They are dark and evil in their own right, some more than others. From enticing chapter titles, to interesting main characters and delightfully chaotic situations, this book has it all.

Sum it up:  A story that is more than spice meets paper, it is a well woven on the edge romantic thriller packing one heck of a punch.

What I liked most: The chemistry between Piper and Noah and not to mention that ending! I am an action, suspense junkie and this book fed me enough chaos to last me a while.

What I liked the least: The slow development of Sam’s story. Piper is to blame for this, her story took off at rocket speed and never let up.

Would I read the sequel(s)? Yes! In fact I have harassed the author about a sequel and other works. Ok, maybe not harassed but inquired and received a very appeasing reply.

Hope you enjoyed this book review, which will make it my 25th review. And if you are into erotic romance/thriller why not read Accidental Passion: Seduction and let me know what you thought of it. Stirring It Up by Mary Leo is up next.

Synopsis

One night after a long day at the hospital, Doctor David Lephmann is confronted by the realities of life in Monster Central, when he intervenes in a fight he knows nothing about. Two women are fighting for their lives in the street, and before he can really think about it, he foolishly chooses sides and wades into the battle. One moment he’s restraining a remarkably strong and lithe woman, the next he’s struggling to escape a huge wolf! The shapeshifter savages him, and shatters his new life. Sorely wounded and infected with lycanthropy, he’s thrust into a world of violence and mistrust where the only thing that matters is strength.

Hoping to find the shifter who destroyed his life, he allies himself with a powerful master vampire. He certainly hadn’t been looking for werewolf romance while fighting for his life, but there’s something very intriguing about a certain shifter woman, and fighting isn’t on his mind whenever he sees her beguiling eyes and snarling lips.

With no way back to his old life, he must fight for a place in this new one, but he’s never had to fight for anything in his life. Can he survive the challenge?

The Angel of Death by Blair C. Babylon

Book Review

10/10

Cover PRE ORDERS 150px

To protect and to serve, or to save her own brother?

Angel Day, the lead sniper for the Phoenix Police Department, got her nickname “The Angel of Death” the old-fashioned way: she earned it for her ruthless efficiency at stopping crimes with one well-placed bullet. When a massive call-out down by the Mexican Border reveals a terrorist cell and turns into a standoff, Angel’s youngest brother, the lost soul of her family, texts her that he is inside that barricaded house, and her orders are to shoot anything that moves.

The Angel of Death is the first in a series written by USA Today Bestselling Author Blair C. Babylon and the first book I’ve read from this author. Though this title is different from her well known romance and erotic romance books written under Blair Babylon (no ‘C’ initials), this series does not fall short of the genre it is written in.

The Angel of Death is a mystery, thriller and suspense story that gives you sizzling action from the get go and refuses to diminish. Each chapter builds on the pressure, the emotions, and the turmoil with just the right mixture of humor and comedy. Regular tedious actions like having dinner, filling out paperwork, are molded into something far more enjoyable, the reader isn’t simply reading about the characters doing these ordinary activities, the reader is peeling back the layers of what makes each and every character interesting, fun, and enthralling.

The personality that is thrown into the writing is catchy and addictive. The imagery, the descriptions of various aspects and situations is wonderfully enjoyable. Halfway through the story one finds themselves at a boiling point, it urges one’s most inner emotions forward and refuses to let go. One has to keep reading, keep feeling for the characters and hoping that the end will make everything alright. All of this and more makes this book easily a favorite and a must read.

The Angel of Death packs one heck of a thrill ride for any action fan and for those who are looking for something different. This book takes on a very enticing formula. Right after the first chapter there is a short recap or alternate point of view from another character that seems to slow the story down. But as one reads these short renditions laid throughout the book they seem to add more personality to the characters, makes them more three dimensional and real.

Those snit bits don’t hinder the book but make it stronger, make it unique. This book is brilliant, it is heart wrenching, and action packed (can’t say it enough). Why hasn’t someone written more books like this?

Sum it up: A tightly wound-up mystery/thriller story packed with so much action that it explodes off the pages.

What I liked most: Everything! Every freaking action packed, emotion stirring, tear jerking thing!!

What I liked the least: That I have to wait for the second one and yes that is a reasonable reason. I have fallen in love with this author, the way she writes, and Angel Day. I want her to find love, to find peace, and to kick more ass just the way she does best.

Would I read the sequel(s)? Yes, yes, and yes! Already downloaded a few of her romance titles. In fact I will be listing one of her books as the free eBook Spotlight of this month for those seeking a more romantic story. 🙂

Hope you all enjoyed this book review. I received this title in exchange for a fair review. Don’t forget to come back to read our next review on Dominion: A Post Apocalyptic Thriller by Doug Goodman, yet another different genre from our usual romance/erotic theme. Doug Goodman is one of the wonderful authors that participated in our NANOWRIMO Author Pep Talks.

Praise for Blair C. Babylon’s other books:

“This is why [Blair C. Babylon] is an author to watch!” ~ Booklist (starred review)

“I stumbled upon this series a few months ago while searching through e-books for the kindle. Out of all of the books I’ve read, this is by far the best. I have never been the type to read things in installments, but this is the first time I’ve faithfully awaited each new episode release. The story … is great, the characters are believable, and I can never really guess what is going to happen next. What more could you want in a series?” ~Amazon Review

“This series just takes my breath away. Breathless!!!! That’s how this book made me feel from beginning to end. It was one of those books I just couldn’t put down until some of my questions were answered. I was constantly on the edge of my seat anxiously hoping it would turn out the way I hoped. I had this same sense of anxious excitement from the very first book of this series and it has not left me yet. This is not your typical cliched novel, where you can tell practically from the first page what is going to happen. Oh no! This book has you waiting with bated breath to see what happens next. I cannot wait for the next book. Ms. Babylon is a genius, who proves every skeptic who says all novels are alike, wrong!” ~Amazon Review

About the Author

USA Today Bestselling Author Blair C. Babylon is the nom de plume of an award-winning author who used to publish literary fiction under another name. Because professional reviews of her literary fiction usually included the caveat that there was too much plot, too many interesting twists, and too much sex, she decided to abandon all literary pretensions, let her freak flag fly, and write intense thrillers and naughty romantic suspense.

Don’t forget to check back on the 23rd of this month to read my book review on this title.
